Urban Classic was created by Bigga Fish and Serious with the BBC.
The first Urban Classic took place on February 16th 2006, when producer DaVinChe and jazz musician Jason Yarde joined conductor Charles Hazlewood and the BBC Concert Orchestra for a special performance at the Hackney Empire.
The ensuing musical journey - mixing up grime, hip hop and classical - also featured MCs Bruza, Tor, Pase and Purple, beatboxer Faith SFX and sets from DJ Semtex and DJ Cameo.
The concept was repeated to massive acclaim in 2012.
First in March, with a sell-out show at London’s Barbican, where multiple BRIT and MOBO Award-winner Ms Dynamite, N-Dubz producer Fazer and leading MCs Devlin and Skepta joined forces with Jules Buckley and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The performance was broadcast live on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra by DJ’s Trevor Nelson and Mistajam.
Then, on July 5th, Urban Prom came to Walthamstow for a free open-air extravaganza. Promoted as part of Walthamstow Forest Council’s ‘Big Six’ pre-Olympic events, the same bill that rocked the Barbican four months earlier was joined by special guest Ed Sheeran. Attracting an estimated audience of 9,000, the event was described by Council Leader Chris Robbins as ‘absolutely stunning’. “Local people of every conceivable age and background were in attendance singing, dancing and smiling from ear to ear.”
And now, on August 10th 2013, Urban Classic will arrive at the Proms.
